An Ideal Husband
By Oscar Wilde
"To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance."
An Ideal Husband is a "social comedy" which mingles wry humour with high drama. If Sir Robert Chiltern refuses to support the lovely but evil Mrs. Cheveley in her dubious foreign canal scheme, the secret she'll reveal could cost him both his wife and his political career.
This threat of imminent disgrace is curiously prophetic.
Along with The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband was still playing to full houses in the West End when it was suddenly pulled overnight - eclipsed by the real-life drama of its author's own fall from grace.
You can see it at the New Headingley Club (access from either Bennett Road or St. Michael's Road), at 7.30pm on Sunday, March 27, in a fully costumed, script-in-hand performance.
